Start with three questions: can the line siphon, can it be blocked, and will pulsation disturb the process?

If suction pressure can drive liquid through the pump or discharge pressure is too low or unstable, review a back-pressure valve. If a closed valve, blocked injection point or other restriction can raise pressure beyond a safe limit, provide a correctly routed relief valve. If cyclic pressure affects instruments, piping or dose consistency, review a pulsation dampener. One device cannot substitute for the others.

Use the symptom and risk to choose the accessory

Low or changing discharge pressure

A reciprocating metering pump is easier to calibrate when it works against a stable discharge condition. Review a back-pressure valve when the injection point is open to a low-pressure vessel, when downstream pressure changes substantially, or when the source tank elevation could create gravity flow through the pump. The valve material, connection and setting must suit the chemical and the real pressure range.

A possible blocked discharge

A positive-displacement pump can continue displacing liquid when the discharge is closed. That makes an independent relief path important wherever a valve can be shut, an injection nozzle can block or crystallize, or piping can become restricted. Route the relief discharge to a location that can safely receive the chemical. Never return a hazardous liquid to an unreviewed point, and do not isolate the pump from its relief device with an operating valve.

Pressure needles or instruments move with every stroke

Stroke-by-stroke pulsation can disturb gauges, flow instruments and long or flexible discharge lines. A pulsation dampener may make the hydraulic signal steadier, but its volume, material, position and gas charge must match the application. If the pump loses prime, handles gas, or operates with an undersized suction line, fix that condition before expecting a dampener to stabilize the dose.

Small check valves foul repeatedly

Review liquid cleanliness and whether a compatible strainer is appropriate. A filter adds suction loss as it loads, so it must be sized and maintained without starving the pump. For liquids that crystallize, settle or contain intentional solids, filtering is not an automatic answer; the pump and suction arrangement require a separate review.

Place each device where it can perform its job

  1. Draw the complete liquid path. Include source-tank level range, suction line, pump, valves, injection point and receiving-system pressure.
  2. Keep the suction side easy to fill. Use a short, airtight line with minimal restrictions and confirm that any strainer does not create unacceptable loss.
  3. Protect the pump before a blockage can trap pressure. The relief path must remain available whenever the pump can run.
  4. Locate the back-pressure function in the discharge system. Coordinate it with the injection point and with any separate relief valve.
  5. Place the dampener close enough to control the relevant pulsation. Follow the approved orientation and charging instructions for the selected device.
  6. Provide isolation only for safe maintenance. Valve positions must not defeat pressure protection during operation.

Commission the system with water only when that is chemically and operationally suitable. Otherwise use an approved test procedure. Confirm the actual delivered volume, observe pressure behavior and record the normal valve positions.

Do not specify accessory settings before these data are known

  • Chemical name, concentration, temperature and any tendency to crystallize, release gas or contain solids.
  • Required minimum, normal and maximum dose rate.
  • Pump model or candidate series, including GB-S, GB, KD or ZR.
  • Source-tank level relative to the pump and the full suction-piping arrangement.
  • Normal and maximum discharge pressure, injection-point design and possible blocked-line condition.
  • Wetted-material requirements, connection sizes and the intended relief return location.
  • Whether calibration, pressure indication, flow monitoring or automatic control is required.

A pressure setting copied from another installation may be unsafe or may make the pump inaccurate. Shanghai Shangcheng can review the accessory arrangement only after the pump duty and system limits are provided.

Questions buyers ask before ordering accessories

Does every metering pump need a back-pressure valve?

No. It is considered when stable positive discharge pressure is not otherwise available, when siphoning is possible, or when changing process pressure affects dosing. Review the complete hydraulic layout first.

Can the relief valve be used to adjust normal pressure?

No. It is an overpressure safeguard. Normal system pressure should be established by the process and any reviewed back-pressure device, while the relief setting remains coordinated with all pressure limits.

Where should relief liquid go?

To a chemically compatible, safely contained return point approved for the process. The route must not expose people, create a reaction hazard or allow pressure to build in the return line.

Will a pulsation dampener make dosing perfectly smooth?

It can reduce cyclic variation when correctly selected and charged, but it does not remove every pulse or compensate for gas, poor suction filling, incorrect pump sizing or worn check valves.
