Low flow does not automatically mean pump failure.

Magnetic drive pump performance must be considered against the real system curve, not only a catalogue maximum. A restriction on the suction side, air entering the line, a partly closed discharge path, changed liquid viscosity or a higher-than-expected total dynamic head can all move the actual duty point away from the intended flow. Start with the accessible system conditions. Only after they are understood should internal wear, impeller condition or magnetic-coupling components be investigated.

Seven checks before opening a magnetic drive pump

1. Check the actual operating point

Record the required flow, the total dynamic head and the conditions at which the pump is being assessed. The actual duty point is where pump capability and system resistance meet. A pump can be correctly assembled and still deliver less flow if the installed pipework, elevation, fittings or process pressure create more resistance than expected. Do not judge site performance from a nameplate or maximum-flow figure alone.

2. Check the suction side first

Many low-flow reports begin at the inlet. Confirm that the suction valve is open, the tank level is adequate and the suction line is correctly sized and routed for the duty. Review pipe length, restrictions, a blocked strainer or filter, suction lift and available inlet pressure. A suction pipe that is too restrictive or partly obstructed can limit pump filling before the discharge side is even considered.

3. Check whether air is entering the suction line

Loose joints, worn gaskets, an incompletely filled suction line, vortexing at a low tank level or a small leak that does not visibly drip can admit air. Air ingress can make flow unstable and can reduce the liquid available to the pump. Inspect the complete inlet path and tank connection rather than tightening only the most obvious fitting.

4. Check discharge resistance

A partly closed valve, plugged filter, fouled heat exchanger, narrow pipe section, added fitting or changed process condition can increase system resistance. Compare the current route with the arrangement used for original selection. Pump performance and system resistance must be reviewed together: opening a line or bypassing a restriction without considering process safety is not a substitute for a controlled diagnosis.

5. Check the liquid properties actually being pumped

Specific gravity, viscosity, temperature, vapour behaviour and crystallization tendency can change from the original duty. A liquid that is colder, more viscous, more concentrated or closer to vapour formation can affect filling and hydraulic performance. Confirm the complete liquid condition, not only its trade name. Material compatibility must also be confirmed against the actual chemical, concentration and temperature.

6. Check for dry-running or loss-of-suction history

Internal friction components in a magnetic drive pump commonly rely on the pumped liquid for lubrication and cooling. A history of dry running, loss of prime, closed-valve operation or interrupted liquid supply increases the reason to inspect the pump, but it does not prove damage by itself. First establish what happened, for how long, and whether the pump continued to have a stable liquid supply.

7. Only then inspect internal pump condition

After the hydraulic and installation checks, inspect the impeller condition, internal bearings, shaft or bushing condition, containment-shell condition and magnetic-coupling condition according to the applicable product documentation and safe isolation procedure. Do not infer an exact CQ or CQB-F internal construction from a general troubleshooting symptom. The correct inspection scope depends on the installed configuration and operating history.

Can a magnetic drive pump run but still deliver very little flow?

Yes. The motor can run while suction restriction, air ingress, high system resistance, changed liquid properties or an unsuitable operating point limits the actual liquid flow.

Should the discharge valve be opened fully to solve low flow?

Do not change a process valve without considering the complete system and process requirement. Confirm the intended valve position and then investigate restrictions and actual system resistance in a controlled manner.

Does low flow prove that the magnetic coupling has failed?

No. Magnetic-coupling condition is one possible inspection item after accessible suction, discharge and liquid-condition causes have been checked.

Why does flow change when the tank level becomes low?
