Stop the pump if liquid does not appear within the established commissioning time.
Self-priming is not dry-running permission. Continued operation without adequate liquid can overheat the mechanical seal and pump components. Isolate electrical power before opening the casing, touching the coupling area or clearing a blockage. If the pumped liquid is hazardous, hot or contaminated, follow the site's containment and personal-protection procedure.
Work through these six checks in order
1. Is the pump casing filled?
The ZW self-priming sewage pump requires priming liquid before initial start. Refill the casing through the approved filling point when it has been drained, serviced or left in a condition where liquid could escape. Confirm that the drain and fill closures seal correctly. Starting with an empty casing is not a valid priming test.
2. Can air enter the suction line?
A suction leak may admit air without leaking visible liquid. Inspect flange gaskets, threaded joints, flexible connectors, valve stems, drain plugs and any temporary test connection. Check that the pipe is supported and not pulling a joint out of alignment. An airtight suction line is essential because the pump must lower the pressure in that line before liquid rises to the casing.
3. Is the suction geometry within the selected duty?
Compare the actual source level with the original selection. A lower liquid level increases static suction lift. Long pipe runs, small diameters, elbows, partly closed valves and loaded strainers add loss. The ZW manual provides series operating and dimensional data, but the allowable installation must be confirmed for the selected model and actual liquid rather than from a general maximum alone.
4. Is air being drawn from the source?
Low submergence, a rapidly falling tank level or a vortex can pull air into the inlet. Wastewater may also release gas or foam during pumping. Observe the source safely and check whether the inlet remains covered throughout startup. Correct the source arrangement instead of repeatedly refilling the pump.
5. Are rotation and speed correct?
After electrical work, verify motor rotation against the approved direction before a sustained run. Also confirm supply conditions and speed against the nameplate and project documentation. Reverse or unsuitable rotation reduces circulation inside the casing and can prevent the pump from evacuating the suction line.
6. Is the internal flow path clear and serviceable?
If installation checks pass, isolate and inspect according to the manual. Debris may obstruct the impeller or recirculation path. Excessive wear, a damaged seal, leaking casing joint or incorrect reassembly can also reduce priming ability. Record what is found; do not change clearances or substitute parts without checking the pump documentation.
Use the symptom to choose the next inspection

A successful prime does not prove that the selection is correct. The pump may lift liquid but still operate away from its required flow and head. Treat priming performance and hydraulic duty as two separate acceptance checks.
After prime returns, verify the operating point
- Allow air to clear while watching the discharge route and source level.
- Record suction level, flow, discharge pressure or total head, motor current and any vibration or leakage.
- Compare the measured condition with the selected ZW model curve and site requirement.
- Confirm that wastewater solids and fibers are consistent with the selected passage and installation.
- Check that the pump retains sufficient liquid for the next planned start.

Prevent the same priming failure from returning
- Mark the normal casing-fill procedure and valve positions near the equipment.
- Pressure- or vacuum-test the suction line after maintenance when the site's procedure permits.
- Keep the suction run as direct as the installation allows and support it independently.
- Inspect the source level and inlet submergence across the full operating cycle.
- Clean restrictions under a planned schedule based on actual wastewater loading.
- Trend priming time. A gradual increase can reveal leakage, wear or buildup before a complete failure.
- Keep the official ZW technical manual available to maintenance staff.
Common questions from site teams
Does self-priming mean the pump can start dry?
No. The casing needs priming liquid before the initial start and after any event that removes retained liquid. Self-priming means the prepared pump can evacuate air from a properly designed suction line.
Why does it prime once and fail on the next start?
Look for loss of retained casing liquid, a suction joint that admits air, a changing source level, vortexing, or internal wear and blockage. Comparing the two start conditions usually narrows the cause.
Should I install a foot valve?
The ZW arrangement is intended to self-prime without treating a foot valve as the universal solution. Any additional valve changes suction loss and solids handling, so review it for the actual wastewater and maintenance plan.
Can a larger motor improve priming?
Not by itself. Priming depends on fill, airtight piping, suction geometry, rotation, liquid behavior and internal condition. Motor selection must remain matched to the approved pump duty.
