The installation method is the first dividing line.

A QW submersible sewage pump operates in the collected liquid. A ZW self-priming sewage pump stays above the liquid and draws through suction piping. Neither is automatically better; pit design, access, wastewater content, duty point and maintenance method decide.

Choose QW when the wet well is central to the design

QW can simplify the hydraulic layout because liquid enters the pump directly in the pit. It is often the starting point for drainage or wastewater collection where submerged equipment and automatic level control are acceptable.

The simplicity of having no suction line does not remove installation work. Confirm minimum operating level, start and stop controls, cable route, lifting method, guide or connection arrangement where applicable, and access for inspection. The wastewater description, required flow and total head still govern the hydraulic selection. Review the QW technical manual with the site drawing.

Choose ZW when above-ground access has real value

ZW keeps the motor and pump accessible outside the wet well. This can make inspection easier where safe floor space, isolation and drainage are available. It also means the pump must evacuate air from a suction line before normal delivery begins.

Check vertical lift separately from discharge head. Keep the suction route direct, airtight and free from high points that trap air. The casing needs priming liquid before initial operation. Send these facts before asking “QW or ZW?”

  • Pit dimensions, normal and extreme liquid levels, and available floor space.
  • Wastewater source, solids, fibers, particle information and any corrosive or abrasive characteristics.
  • Required normal and peak flow.
  • Static elevation, discharge route and calculated system losses.
  • Preferred submerged or dry installation and the reason for that preference.
  • Power supply, level control, standby requirement and maintenance access.
  • For ZW, the proposed suction-pipe size, length, fittings and pump elevation.
  • For QW, the lifting, cable and discharge-connection arrangement.

If safe access to a submerged pump is difficult, that weighs against QW. If an airtight, hydraulically suitable suction line cannot be provided, that weighs against ZW. Resolve the site constraint before comparing model numbers.
