This is only an arrangement decision. First confirm that an inline single-stage centrifugal pump suits the clean liquid, flow and total dynamic head. Then compare structural support, motor removal space, valve access, drainage and maintenance handling. Select the exact model from its own performance curve and dimensional drawing.
The hydraulic question comes before the orientation question
The ISG vertical inline pump and ISW horizontal inline pump are single-stage centrifugal arrangements for clean water and liquids with similar physical properties. Typical duties on the product pages include building water supply, HVAC circulation, industrial cooling water and general clean-liquid transfer.

Do not assume one orientation is automatically more efficient. Efficiency and motor load depend on the selected model and operating point. Orientation mainly changes how the equipment fits, is supported and is maintained.
Review the room as a maintenance space, not just an equipment footprint
For an ISG vertical arrangement
Measure available height above the motor and the route for lifting or removing components. Check nearby cable trays, ducts and valves before fixing the pump position. A compact floor plan becomes a maintenance problem if the motor cannot be removed safely. The structure must support the installed load and any maintenance handling specified by the site.
For an ISW horizontal arrangement
Allow clear floor space around the base and access to fasteners, seal area, motor terminal box and casing connections. Confirm that doors, walkways and adjacent equipment do not block removal. The base must be level and supported according to the project design; direct coupling does not make foundation condition unimportant.
For either arrangement
Operators need room to read instruments, reach isolation valves and manage drainage without standing over rotating equipment. Provide a safe route for component removal and keep water away from electrical equipment. A dimension drawing should be reviewed before piping is fabricated, not after the pump arrives.
Six piping checks decide whether either pump will run reliably
- Support piping independently. Do not use pump flanges to correct pipe misalignment or carry unsupported pipe weight.
- Calculate total dynamic head. Include static difference, pipe friction, fittings and the required pressure at the destination.
- Protect suction conditions. Keep the inlet correctly sized, free of trapped air and either flooded or properly primed before operation.
- Use valves for operation and maintenance. Position isolation and check valves according to the system design without creating an avoidable suction restriction.
- Provide venting and drainage. Trapped air can prevent a centrifugal pump from developing the expected duty, while uncontrolled drainage complicates safe service.
- Verify rotation before loading the pump. After electrical connection, use the approved short check and confirm the nameplate supply conditions.
The product documentation treats both series as clean-liquid pumps unless a configuration is specifically reviewed otherwise. Abrasive solids, fibers, corrosive chemicals or unusual temperature conditions require a separate material and hydraulic assessment. Another centrifugal pump configuration or pump family may be more suitable.
A buyer checklist before approving ISG or ISW
- Liquid name, temperature, density and whether any abrasive or suspended material is present.
- Normal, minimum and maximum required flow.
- Total dynamic head with the calculation basis, not discharge pipe size alone.
- Suction source level, available pressure, pipe size and route.
- Installation drawing showing footprint, height, pipe centerlines and maintenance access.
- Power supply, control method, duty cycle and any standby-pump arrangement.
- Required connection standard, materials and any project-specific documentation.
Compare the published model curve with the system duty rather than choosing by motor power. Confirm that the operating point remains suitable across the expected flow range and that the selected motor is not overloaded. The official ISG manual and ISW manual contain series curves and dimensional tables for model review.
Three final questions before layout approval
Is ISG always the better choice for a small pump room?
Not always. It can reduce floor length, but a low ceiling, overhead services or difficult vertical lifting may favor another arrangement. Compare the complete service envelope.
Can ISG and ISW use the same duty point?
The required flow and total dynamic head come from the same system, but the available model curves and motor selections must be checked separately for each series.
Can the connecting pipe carry the pump?
Do not assume so. Piping should be independently supported and aligned so external loads are not forced into the flanges. Follow the approved foundation and support design for the selected model.
Which orientation is easier to maintain?
The answer depends on the room. ISG needs suitable vertical removal access; ISW needs horizontal working space. The easier arrangement is the one that provides safe access to the actual service points.
